About Us

Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP) is for older people who are mostly – but not completely – able to live and cope on their own, and don’t yet need higher levels of support at home.

CHSP Eligibility

Frail, older person who:

  • is aged 65 years and over (or 50 years and over for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples); and
  • has difficulty performing activities of daily living without help due to functional limitations (for example communications, social interaction, mobility or self-care); and
  • lives in the community.

Community Services #1 provides the following services under the Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP)

Social support group – social activities in a community-based group setting

Social support services can help you to maintain an active social life by having someone visit you in your home, or by arranging visits and outings in the community. Social support and activities can help you find a place where you feel supported and can help prevent loneliness and isolation.

Community Services #1 offers the following social support groups:


Social support individual

Services may include visiting services and accompanied activities such as assisting the person through accompanied shopping, bill paying, attendance at appointments and other related activities.


The Special Care Transport program is designed to assist with transport to medical appointments, social and shopping activities.

Domestic assistance

Domestic assistance can help you with home related tasks such as cleaning, dishwashing, clothes washing, ironing and unaccompanied shopping.

Personal care

Personal care may include assistance with eating, bathing, going to the toilet, grooming, dressing, getting in and out of bed, moving about the house.

Gardening maintenance

Garden maintenance such as lawn mowing and pruning where there are issues for client safety and access.

Specialised Support Services

Specialised Support Services such as client advocacy and support including accompanying people to appointments with medical providers utilising the skills of a bilingual Case Manager.

Specialised support services are available for clients from Croatian, Spanish and Chinese communities.

Assistance with Care & Housing for the Aged ACHA

The objective of the program is to support vulnerable clients who are homeless or at risk of homelessness to remain in the community, through accessing appropriate, sustainable and affordable housing and linking them where appropriate, to community care and other support services.

Senior Social group

The Senior Social Group meets every Thursday, 10:30am-12:30pm, at Community Services #1, Narrabundah. Activities include Bingo, Guest speakers, Excursions, Morning tea

Walk and Talk

The Walk and Talk Group is open to everyone and meets every Wednesday, 10:00am-12:00pm (longer if on an excursion) at Community Services #1, Narrabundah. Activities include Morning teas, Short walks, Craft, Guest speakers, Excursions.

Chinese, Croatian and Spanish Community Social Groups

The Chinese Social Support Group meets every Tuesday, 10:00am-3:00pm at the Theo Notaras Multicultural Centre, Civic, every Wednesday, 10:00am-3:00pm at the Riders Club, Gungahlin and every Friday 9am -5:00pm at the Dickson Tradies Club. Activities are run in conjunction with ACT Chinese Aged Care Information Service and include traditional dancing and singing, physical activities ( playing TaiJi, walking, healthy exercises, etc.), reading Chinese newspapers and magazines, entertainment ( playing MaJun, Chinese chess, cards, watching Chinese movies, etc.), social contacts and activities ( chatting, sharing and exchanging ideals and experiences of health, etc.),Information ( Aged Care, Health, social Security and welfare, etc.) and excursions.

The Croatian Day Group is designed specifically for people from Croatian communities. The group meets every 1st, 2nd and 3rd Wednesday of each month, 10am -2:00pm at the Belconnen Labour Club and on the 4th Wednesday of each month, the group meets at 10am -2:00pm at Community Services #1, Narrabundah. Group activities include social activities and excursions.

A support group for Spanish speaking members of the community meets on the first and third Fridays of each month, 10am -3:00pm at Community Services #1, Griffith Hall. Activities include cooking, craft, picnics, outings, dancing, singing etc.
