Welcome to Gunnedah! With rich agricultural vistas and breathtaking landscapes, Gunnedah is the hub of Australia's richest agricultural region - the Liverpool Plains. The hustle and bustle of Australia's biggest live cattle auctions on Tuesday mornings at the sale yards is a sight to see! While the drought sadly has diminished the koala population, the cuddly local icons can still be spotted, and you just need to look harder whilst discovering all the other attractions. Museums illustrate the region's past, memorials reminding us of local heroes and galleries and public art displaying the great artistic talents of the area. Poetry is scattered throughout the town, a homage to Dorothea Mackellar of 'My Country' fame. Annual events and community celebrations occur throughout the year: Australia Day Celebrations, Ag Quip Field Days, Weeks of Speed, Dorothea Mackellar Poetry Awards, Gunnedah Show, Bird Expo and Sale, Country Music Muster, Gold Cup, Dirt Track or Speedway Racing, North West Swap Meet, equine and sporting events, monthly Markets and Championship Dog Shows, each one worthy of making your stay a memorable one. The main street offers good retail therapy with boutique, Chain and department stores. Dining options include a range of cafes offering grab-and-go, fresh Crumbly pastries or big hearty sit-down brekkies. Homestyle Pub meals, takeaway and fine dining options, there's plenty of choices - Gunnedah has it all! Pick up a Picnic hamper or some take-away and set up at one of the great lookouts or parks - can't beat good coffee and food with a view! Accommodation options to suit any need and budget, Gunnedah is a great spot to base yourself and explore the North West region. Small rural villages out yonder with endless fields of sunflowers, sorghum, wheat, cotton and vibrant canola in season, or action-packed activities and water sports at Lake Keepit and the natural wonders of surrounding National Parks and forests. Child and pet-friendly and inclusive. If you have any special needs, please get in contact with the staff at the Gunnedah Visitor Information Centre who may be able to help you plan your stay.
