Youth in ACTion for Suicide Prevention is a local group of young volunteers working to prevent youth suicide in the ACT region, through the promotion of self-care and help-seeking behaviour. We were established at the request of ACT Health as part of a national networks program, funded under the National Suicide Prevention Strategy. Youth in ACTion for Suicide Prevention’s first initiative– ‘Treat yo’self’ – aimed to increase self-care behaviour and start positive conversations about self-care in the ACT. This campaign utilised social media to create a visual library of self-care role models for all Canberrans, and was an important first step towards Youth in ACTion for Suicide Prevention’s goal of creating a culture of self-care and help-seeking in the ACT. Since the campaign, Youth in ACTion for Suicide Prevention has continued to encourage self-care and help-seeking behaviour by participating in a number of local events targeted at young people in Canberra. If you’re a young Canberran who would like to help prevent youth suicide or would like to know more about our work, you’re welcome to contact us at [email protected].
