Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT)
Wendybird is a not-for-profit community group led by a collective of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex and Queer (LGBTIQ) people who are working together to intentionally grow a safer and always supportive community for people of diverse bodies, genders, relationships and sexualities, their friends, families and children to find meaningful connections.
We understand and value the role that connection, belonging and community plays in our mental health and well-being and in reducing suicide in our community. For those of us who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer, or have a diversity of sex, sexuality or gender identity that is outside the norm; community, belonging and acceptance can be incredibly hard to find because of our experiences of rejection, exclusion, discrimination and prejudice.
So we venture out to find our community. However, the LGBTI community is often centered around our pubs and clubs which are not particularly conducive spaces for forming meaningful connections with others. Many of these spaces are also only targeted to one part of the community, where they deliberately or incidentally exclude some by aiming to cater to the needs of some.
Other opportunities for community do exist, and I am sure we have all ventured out to find this at some stage, but as these are small, unfunded, volunteer run and not well advertised, these can be hard to find even when you are resilient, confident and resourceful, let alone if you are vulnerable, uncertain and scared. Sometimes we are lucky to find our people and community, though many times we are not.
The Wendybird aims to create safe and supportive spaces that provides opportunities for the diversity of the whole community to connect with others with a shared experience, to find a sense of belonging with others who accept and welcome them and to form a community where the diversity of each individual is celebrated.
We are not limited by labels and identities, so when we say that our events and activities are for all people, we do mean all, and we mean you!
The Wendybird is currently based in Brisbane, Queensland.
