About Us

MHATODS offers an integrated mental health and drug and alcohol service to young people detained in the Brisbane Youth Detention Centre (BYDC). Young people's involvement with the Service is voluntary and it offers them the same quality of professional services which would be available to their peers in the community. Uniquely in Queensland, it also offers both mental health and substance abuse treatment in one integrated service usually with the same therapist involved. Referral can be made by staff of BYDC, Child Safety Officers, Juvenile Justice workers, family members and Child and Youth Mental Heath Service workers. MHATODS has a multidisciplinary team consisting of consultant psychiatrist, social work, psychology, indigenous health staff and admin support. MHATODS has a strong commitment to ensuring clinical follow up where required for young people on their release from detention and has strong links with the Child and Youth Forensic Outreach Service whose role it is to facilitate that transition.
