About Us
It all began in a coffee shop...
Prior to its official launch, METRO began as a Bible study in a coffee shop. Soon these preliminary meetings outgrew the premises and momentum began to develop ahead of the official launch of the church.
METRO kicked off with a BANG in 2006 with a huge free concert featuring Australian Idol winner, Guy Sebastian. Almost 4000 people came out to celebrate the launch of what would quickly become one of the great congregations of the region, with 1000 people in regular attendance.
After the launch event, which was held in the city's largest indoor stadium, METRO began to host weekly meetings in a rented cinema. It was filled from day one and sometimes people had to sit on the floor as every seat was taken.
Many people who had never attended church before felt comfortable visiting METRO because of its relevant and contemporary styling. As a result, since the launch, METRO has never had a weekend go by without people making an authentic decision to follow Christ. The resulting stories of transformed lives are the very best part of the METRO story.
After renting in the cinema for two years, METRO was greatly blessed to receive an old church facility (as a freehold gift) which was promptly renovated and used by the church for 10 years. The Church building on Southport's Ridgeway Ave was sold in 2018 and METRO Church relocated to its new venue just off the M1 in Varsity Lakes.
Founding pastors Garry & Kasey McDonald finished their roles in July 2020 and the board announced the new Senior Pastors Dave & Jenny Gilpin to the church in November 2020.
METRO Church Gold Coast is part of the largest Pentecostal movement in Australia called the Australian Christian Churches, with over 1,000 churches, 3,200 pastors and 375,000 believers across the nation.
