About Us

The Ipswich Genealogical Society was Queensland's first genealogical society. It was formed in 1977 and became incorporated in 1985 and known as the Ipswich Genealogical Society Inc.

With an average yearly membership of 70 to 80 the Society is managed and operated by a group of dedicated volunteers, and they are on hand to help and guide members and visitors with their family and local history research.

The Society enjoys a good working relationship with the Ipswich City Council and the Ipswich Historical Society, and maintains links with other genealogical, family history and historical societies. . 

Members are encouraged to become actively involved in one or more of the many projects that the Society undertakes from time to time. These projects are for the purpose of creating resources for the Society by collating and compiling some of the vast amounts of local knowledge and history.

The Ipswich Genealogical Society publishes and distributes its own magazine "Bremer Echoes", free of charge, by post or electronically, three times per year to members and exchanges with other Societies throughout Australia and the British Isles.

The rooms are open research three days a week, Monday, Thursday and Saturday.
