About Us

Mount Isa Youth Shelter was established in 1983 to assist homeless youth in Mount Isa and regional areas. The youth shelter service provides crisis support to young people who are homeless, or at risk of homelessness, and move them towards independent living or family reconciliation where appropriate.

The Youth Shelter is a ten bed facility that can cater for both males and females and any young person between the ages of 16—25 can refer into the service. Young people can self refer or an organisation can refer a young person to the Shelter. The Youth Shelter is funded for short term crisis accommodation meaning the maximum length of stay is 3 months.

Mount Isa Youth Shelter is staffed 24 hours, 7 days a week and our friendly, caring staff is always available to assist and support young people in crisis.

The Youth Shelter provides more than just accommodation, staff work with young people to meet their immediate needs within the crisis period and supports clients to learn independent living skills. Residential youth workers engage client’s to develop a case management plan, in which the young person identifies short and long term goals and develop an action plan for the future.

The Youth Shelter provide referrals to other community agencies in order that our client’s have access to other quality services so that they receive all the support they need to get back on track. It is important to note that for those young people under the age of 16 and in the Care of a Statutory body, prior approval by the appointed Government Regional Director is required before placement to the shelter is permitted.
