Devonport sits on the banks of the Mersey River and is Tasmania's third largest city. It's also the arrival and departure point of the Spirit of Tasmania ferry on its daily journey to and from Geelong. There are excellent beaches, lots of walking and cycling tracks, a river suitable for rowing and sailing, and numerous parklands. Devonport is a great place to take a stroll or stay after the sea voyage from Melbourne, with riverside parkland leading to protected swimming beaches and a short walk to Mersey Bluff Lighthouse with views of Bass Strait. You can explore Devonport's coastline by walking along the coastal trail to the Bluff and nearby aboriginal rock carvings. Devonport also has a rich maritime history and at the Bass Strait Maritime Centre you'll find an extensive collection of models and interpretive displays recounting the city's maritime past. You can even take the Helm of the SS Woniora in a simulated experience and bring a 1910 steamer into the Mersey River or through the heads of Port Phillip Bay. Rich farmland surrounds the city and produces more than 40 per cent of Tasmania's vegetable crops. From Devonport, you can follow the Cradle Coast Tasting Trail and enjoy the handcrafted produce of the dedicated growers and makers inspired by the ideal growing conditions of the region. The city is also close to some of Tasmania's best heritage towns and national parks. Devonport is a 1-hr drive (98 km) west of Launceston.
