Picabeen Community Assoc Inc
Picabeen Community Association Inc is an independent community based organisation managed by a volunteer committee of local residents and covers the area from Mitchelton to Ferny Grove and the Hills Districts.
The aim of the association is to encourage residents to take an active part in their community, to promote awareness of community issues and available services, to advocate to governments for resources to support local programs and to develop social, cultural, educational and recreational activities.
The Youth Worker based at Picabeen provides an information and referral service for young people (12 - 25) in north west Brisbane. Various youth programs operate through the centre including youth holiday and after school activities, a support service, workshops on youth issues, event management and outreach work with young people.
Picabeen also has three Youth Support Coordinators who provide services to learning communities. They work directly with individual young people and their families, providing needs assessment, limited case management, advocacy, information and skills development.
Picabeen activities include information and referral, counselling, financial counselling, interagency meetings, computer and internet access, English conversation classes, craft classes, GOLD programs, computer classes, foreign language classes, literacy and numeracy programs, Time out for young Mum's group, volunteer tutor training courses, mah jong social group, Community Garden project, Tai Chi classes, and art classes. The Centre is also home to Toughlove and the Mitchelton Older Womens Network.
