Bega image

Bega is the country heart of the Sapphire Coast, surrounded by rolling green hills, rich pastures and the most relaxed cows in Australia. The town is dotted with galleries, cafes and quirky shops, as well as the famous Bega Cheese Factory. The preservation of historical buildings, particularly in the main street and Church Street, make it easy to imagine what life was like when horse and cart ruled the roads. Just around the corner modern life returns with the South East Centre of Contemporary Art (opening soon in 2023) and Sapphire Market Place. Settle in on the banks of the Bega River, Kisses Lagoon or Glebe Park, there are picnic tables under the shade of she oaks, poplars and weeping willows. In autumn the spectacular show of colour makes you want to kick up your heels in the leaves. Three kilometres north of the township you can take it all in at the Bega Lookout. The Bega region is renowned for its many activities and cultural delights: deep-sea fishing off Bermagui, whale watching at Eden, award-winning cheeses at Bega and rich Aboriginal heritage around Wallaga Lake. In Merimbula and Tathra the town's main assets are summer water sports including fishing, swimming, boating, lake cruises, scuba diving, sailboarding and canoeing. Head inland from Bega and discover the farming history in the towns and villages that dot the region. Candelo, Cobargo, Bemboka and Wolumla all feature spectacular pastoral views, historical buildings, an abundance of local produce and some unique places to stop and grab a bite to eat.
