Bega is the urban centre of the Sapphire Coast, but it's heart is dotted with rich lagoons and galleries and it's surrounded by rich pastures and rain forests. The preservation of historical buildings, particularly in the main street and Church Street, make it easy to imagine what life was like when horse and cart ruled the roads. Just around the corner modern life returns with the Bega Valley Regional Gallery and Sapphire Market Place. Three kilometres north of the township you can take it all in at the Bega Lookout. The Bega region is renowned for its many activities and cultural delights: deep-sea fishing off Bermagui, whale watching at Eden, award-winning cheeses at Bega and rich Aboriginal heritage around Wallaga Lake. In Merimbula and Tathra the town's main assets are summer water sports including fishing, swimming, boating, lake cruises, scuba diving, sailboarding and canoeing. Head inland from Bega and discover the farming history in the towns and villages that dot the region. Candelo, Cobargo, Bemboka and Wolumla all feature spectacular pastoral views, historical buildings, an abundance of local produce and some unique places to stop and grab a bite to eat.
