Nimmitabel is a small rural township on the Great Dividing Range, at 1070 metres. Settled in the 1850s, it was once known as Nimity Bell, a name said to mean the place where many waters start. You can explore the historic village including Geldmacher House and Mill and St Andrew's Catholic Church by taking a walk around town. There is a self-guided booklet available from Cooma Visitors Centre. Nimmitabel host a Steampunk at Altitude festival on the first weekend of May where there are a variety of activities and entertainment for the whole family. In 1959 Nimmitabel was used by Warner Brothers as one of the locations for the filming of Jon Cleary's novel, The Sundowners.
