The historical township of Bundarra is located on Thunderbolt's Way between Uralla and Inverell, on the banks of the Gwydir River. An historic gold and copper mining town, today the land is largely used for agricultural purposes, mainly sheep and cattle production and is still home to some of the original stations, such as Abington, Clerkness and Laura. Some of Australia's finest wool is still produced here. A small, but unique village with a population of 400, Bundarra has a lot to offer. Visit the Courthouse and Bottle Museums and browse the wonderful General Store with newsagent, liquor store and gift shop, as well as the Pink Flamingo Café . Activities include fishing, canoeing, bushwalking and bird watching (Bundarra is one of the few places where you can still see the endangered Regent Honeyeater). The Gwydir River offers a relaxing environment for family picnics and barbecues, or appreciation of the abundance of platypus, echidnas, water birds and wildlife in general. It is a noted breeding ground for freshwater fish species such as cod, redfin, yellow belly, catfish, silver perch and bass. There is a camping ground located in the centre of town with powered sites, as well as a free camping ground at Emu Crossing, 2.5 kilometres south of town. The Emu Crossing camp ground has toilets and a small shelter. When the river is flowing , you may see platypus feeding and playing close to the river bank in the late afternoon. Bundarra is a good place to stock up with supplies, gas and ice for your camping trip.
