Thirroul image

The English writer DH Lawrence lived in Thirroul in 1922 and wrote much of his Australian novel Kangaroo here. Wyewurk, the home he lived in, is now privately owned, however, a park at the end of Craig Street offers a glimpse of the views Lawrence enjoyed. The town maintains a proud cultural heritage and has a lively arts community. The most compelling reason to visit Thirroul is its wonderful beach backed by a large grassy park with a children's play area. It is close to crafty shops and delightful cafes. Dine directly on Thirroul Beach in the recently renovated Thirroul Beach Pavilion. First opened in 1940, the historic Pavilion offers a casual beachfront dining experience and the perfect spot for your next special event or takeaway. There is an annual non for profit Festival called Thirroul Seaside and Arts Festival where artists throughout the region showcase their work over a weekend with lots of interactive activities for the whole family. Be sure to pedal the Wollongong Cycleway, a purpose-built track parallel to the ocean that passes through Thirroul and beyond.
