Battery Point image

Battery Point is Hobart's most historic suburb; it began life as a home for mariners working out of Hobart Town and is still a residential area today with many homes classified by the National Trust. Just a short walk from Salamanca Place and Hobart's waterfront, Battery Point retains all the character of a Cornish fishing village of the last century with restaurants, antique shops and several pubs. Of special interest is Arthurs Circus, a ring of early cottages surrounding the old village green at the heart of Battery Point, and the colonial museum, Narryna, with its collection of fine and decorative arts. You can walk to Battery Point from Salamanca Place up Kelly's Steps (1839). The steps were originally cut into a cliff face that overlooked the wharfs of Sullivans Cove. The warehouses that line the cove - now Salamanca Place - were quarried from the cliffs. Walking tours are available.
