Eaglehawk Neck image

Eaglehawk Neck is a narrow strip of land that connects the Forestier Peninsula with the beginning of the Tasman Peninsula on Tasmania's south-east coast. The Peninsula is known for its white sandy beaches and some of the best surf in Tasmania, as well as its dramatic sea cliffs and remarkable geology. Stop at the lookout before Eaglehawk Neck for stunning views over Pirates Bay and the coastline. The distinguishing feature of the landscape is its remarkable geology. At the Neck itself is the Tessellated Pavement, while a short drive further south are the impressive coastal rock formations of the Devils Kitchen, Tasman Arch and the Blowhole. You can get close to this amazing seascape on an award-winning cruise from Pirates Bay that takes in some of the most dramatic coastline you'll ever experience, with towering dolerite and sandstone sea cliffs past seals, dolphins and penguins. Just south of the township in the Tasman National Park is Waterfall Bay, one of the best boat diving areas in Tasmania and a dramatic place for bushwalking. A line of ferocious dogs once guarded the Neck to stop convicts escaping from the nearby Port Arthur penal settlement. While little remains of the historic site, there's a small museum in the former colonial-built Officers Quarters. Eaglehawk Neck is a 1-hr drive (75 km) south of Hobart.
