Wander along Newhaven's picturesque waterfront and soak up the atmosphere of this seaside village. Cast a line off the jetty or watch native birds in the wetlands, go for a swim, explore historic Churchill Island or set sail in Western Port. Newhaven's waterfront is popular with fisherfolk and water sports enthusiasts, while the calm waters of Western Port offer excellent sailing, whether on your own boat or a charter. For a bird's eye view of the rugged coastline, take a scenic flight over the island in a helicopter. Make your way to nearby Cape Woolamai for excellent surf breaks along with abundant marine life and the spectacular ancient pink granite coastline. Fisher's Wetland is a must see for birdwatchers and photographers alike. Bring your camera or binoculars and see black swans, pelicans, Cape Barren geese, purple hens and ducks out on the water. Churchill Island is the site of Victoria's first European settlement and offers visitors a chance to explore historic farm buildings and the original homestead. Drive, cycle or even kayak to this historic site and time your visit to coincide with the monthly farmers' market so you can stock up on fresh regional produce and local delicacies. Learn more about the island's history at The National Vietnam Veterans Museum, which tells the story of Australia's involvement in the Vietnam War. Sweet tooths will want to make time for a visit to the Phillip Island Chocolate Factory – a delectable chocolate universe, while Bonsai Island Gallery is a tranquil place for a stroll and a chance to learn the art of bonsai. Newhaven is 126 kilometres from Melbourne, or around an hour-and-a-half by car along the M1 and the Bass Highway.
