Discover the quiet village of Rhyll, located on the south-east tip of Phillip Island. See koalas and myriad bird life at close range, dine out on fresh seafood, and wander through pristine natural landscapes. Sip award-winning cool climate wines and tuck into succulent seafood at local wineries and restaurants. Come sunset, watch the sky change colour from the bay windows of a local B&B. The internationally recognised wetlands of Rhyll Inlet and Conservation Hill are renowned for the number and diversity of local birdlife. See royal spoonbills, swans and straw-necked ibises, as well as the million-strong colony of migrating shearwaters (mutton birds) inbound from Alaska. Watch sleepy koalas in the trees from the raised boardwalks at the Koala Conservation Centre, part of Phillip Island Nature Park. Travel inland to the local trout farm, where the kids can catch their own dinner and learn about the ancient ways of the Koorie culture on the bush tucker trail. For a glimpse of the island's forests as they once were, take a stroll along the walking tracks in the Oswin Roberts Reserve. Life in Rhyll means life on the water, so make the most of the village's excellent all-tide boat ramp, slipway, jetties, yacht club, angling club and sailing school. Hire a boat and sail the sheltered port, charter a fishing expedition, or visit remote French Island to see the local koalas and native orchids. The foreshore features barbecues and amenities, making it perfect for picnicking. Rhyll is 140 kilometres from Melbourne, or around one hour and 45 minutes by car along the M1 and the Bass Highway.
