Walkaway, Western Australia

Walkaway image

Stretch your legs in Walkaway, a charming road trip rest stop nestled on the banks of the picturesque Greenough River. Learn about local pioneering history at Station Museum, picnic with the peregrine falcons and take a dip at picturesque Ellendale Pool's, or marvel at the man-made wonder of the 54-turbine wind farm. A four-and-a-half-hour drive north of Perth, and just 25 minutes south of Geraldton, this quaint country town is the ideal place to take a break from the road, either for refreshments or an overnight stopover. Rail and history buffs will be fascinated by the Walkaway Station Museum. Wandering through the beautiful old railway station building, it's easy to imagine what pioneering life would have been like in its heyday during the late 1800s. Examine the excellent display of regional transport, natural resources and military relics; see where the station master lived and worked; and learn about local settler history. After immersing yourself in the past, take a refreshing dip in the natural watering hole of Ellendale Pool, 20 kilometres from Walkaway. Lapping at the foot of impressive river cliffs and surrounded by tall shady trees, the pool makes a beautiful backdrop for a picnic or barbecue - look high up on the cliffs and you might see peregrine falcons nesting. For an equally impressive man-made sight, head to the nearby wind farm - by far the largest renewable energy operation in Western Australia, capable of powering 60,000 homes. From the viewing platform and visitors' area located on Nangetty-Walkaway Road, you'll be able to appreciate the sheer scale of the farm, with its 54 Vestas 1.65 megawatt wind turbines. If you'd like to take your time exploring the area, you can camp at Ellendale Pool, or find creature comforts in a range of accommodation options in and around Walkaway, from the caravan park to bed and breakfast and self-contained accommodation.
