A convenient crossroads rest stop, Lake King is a great place to experience the sheer diversity of the outback landscape. Here, you can immerse yourself in the rugged beauty of Frank Hann National Park, challenge yourself to a rock-climbing expedition on Peak Charles or drive Western Australia's longest salt lake road. Set amid pristine bushland, sand plains and salt lakes, Lake King is a five-and-a-half-hour drive east of Perth en route to Norseman or Esperance, To the east, Frank Hann National Park invites you to explore 61,420 hectares of native heath flora. Hit the walk trails to discover local history, birdlife and some of the southern Wheatbelt's best displays of spring wildflowers (June to November). While you're exploring, add another fascinating excursion to your road trip. Drive the extraordinary Lake King Causeway, spanning 10 kilometres of salt lakes studded with natural scrub and wildflowers. Take the Magdhaba Track through a conservation reserve of native flora and fauna to Roe Hill Lookout. Or head for magnificent Peak Charles - rising 480 metres above the surrounding area, it's a popular rock climbing destination, with many smaller faces and gullies suiting a range of climbing styles and abilities. When it's time to top up your energy levels, Mount Madden Cairn is an idyllic spot for a picnic, or visit Lake King's yabby farm to taste this local freshwater delicacy. Otherwise, the town's tavern has an inviting restaurant, if you're looking for a hearty meal and beverage. Satisfy your appetite for pioneering history on the Roe Heritage Trail Walk, retracing part of the historic journey taken by surveyor General Roe in 1848. Be sure to take a moment to admire the town's stone-fronted church on your walk. Whether you're stopping briefly or overnight, you'll find everything you need at Lake King.
