Coffs Harbour Bridge Club

Coffs Harbour Bridge Club has an unusual history. George Vermont started it as a private business in 1978, with 16 members playing only once a week. In 1993, Mr Vermont became critically ill and could not continue. The members decided to buy him out and the first committee was elected. Our first President was Mrs Isabel Wallace. The club had 104 members at that time, and played 3 times per week. The enthusiasm was overwhelming and our members studied to become directors. The premises we occupied became too small and at a special meeting the members voted to build our own clubhouse. Fundraising started in a serious way. We looked towards the Coffs Harbour City Council for land. A choice of leasing or buying was put to us, but the members opted for the purchase. The building work took less than 3 months, and we played our first game in the new clubhouse on 1st August, 1996.

Today we have 195 members, 16 directors and bridge is played five times a week. We hold bridge lessons regularly, also supervised games and novice sections. We have two congresses a year, and have held the Masters Games in 1998 and 2000.

Coffs Harbour with its beautiful beaches and numerous holiday resorts brings a lot of visitors from the south. Visitors are always welcome at Coffs Harbour Bridge Club.
