About Us

The Kennedy Electorate is a federal electoral division located in northern Queensland and is classified as a rural electorate. It extends across a vast and diverse landscape, stretching from Queensland’s tropical coastline between Cairns and Townsville through to the remote inland regions bordering the Northern Territory and the Gulf of Carpentaria. The electorate includes coastal communities such as Mission Beach and Cardwell, major regional and remote centres like Mount Isa, and numerous smaller towns, islands and Aboriginal shire areas. This geographic scale reflects a mix of mining, agriculture, tourism and culturally significant lands across some of the most sparsely populated parts of the state. First contested at the inaugural federal election, Kennedy is one of Australia’s original electorates and is named after Edmund Besley Court Kennedy, an explorer who led early expeditions through northern Queensland. Over time, boundary changes have reduced its size from an even broader early footprint, though it remains one of the largest and most geographically diverse divisions in the country. Communities within Kennedy often share priorities shaped by distance and regional isolation, including reliable transport and communications, access to health and education services, support for regional industries, and the management and protection of vast natural environments across northern and outback Queensland.
