About Us

Mackay Powerboat Club was founded in 2018 by local members Brad Nelson and Families. Mackay Power Boats Club has continued to run and grow in the last three years. We are a not for profit organisation whose primary focus is on club growth and development of Powerboat racing in the Mackay region while supporting local charities. The Club utilises local facilities – Kinchant Dam and supports local businesses and communities. We are a predominantly local member base with some southern and northern Queensland members who travel to race with us and are now great mates.
We support our drivers and junior racing's growth and development while educating and promoting water and driver safety in watercraft. We focus on building teamwork and being an inclusive club. We teach and support our members about boat maintenance, safety and skills. Our junior members are encouraged to help and assist with the maintenance of their boats while learning about racing and fair play rules and regulations.
We are a family-friendly club where our focus is on including the whole family. We organise race days and have social days to enjoy telling stories of racing and building a positive community.
.
As a club, we pride ourselves on being open, honest and supportive of all our members while encouraging personal growth and growth of the sport of powerboat racing.

We run Powerboat race meets in a similar style to circuit racing with four laps. Each lap is approximately 1.2km long, in which the highest-powered boats complete in the 2-minute time range. Our classes are GPS speed restricted, and the Club monitors these supplied GPS trackers and are reviewed at the end of each race by race officials and timekeepers. E.g. under 60 mph class – 60.0 mph is fine – you haven't broken out 60.1mph; you have broken out and will record a DNF for your race round.
All classes follow the same racing rules, and because of this, it allows boats to run in multiple classes, so father and son or mother and daughter can race the same boat in the different race classes we currently have in our Club. To ensure our races are fair and reward consistent, we run a Handicapped system to enable all racers to win and secure a close race finish. This system rewards consistency and driver capability over high-cost high-powered boats, meaning you can utilise your weekend ski boat and not have to build a custom race boat to be competitive within the classes. This also helps provide some spectator interest watching the faster Boats chase down the slower boats, which is highly entertaining when coming into the corners.
KING of the DAM - this is the premier Race. Every driver has been fighting to qualify for this race over the 8 races on the weekend. Only the two (2) highest point-scoring boats from each class get to race. All boats run with a handicap system taken from each boat's fastest recorded lap time throughout the weekend. This means the fastest boats have to chase and the slower boats may have up to a 90second head start on a 4 lap race. This race thrives on a photo finish at the end and will be the grand finale for the event. Thus requiring King of the Dam status.
