About Us

The Indi Electorate is located in north-eastern Victoria, extending from the Murray River along the New South Wales border through alpine, riverine and rural landscapes. It encompasses a wide range of communities, including regional centres such as Wodonga, Wangaratta and Benalla, as well as smaller towns and alpine resorts across the High Country. Much of the electorate includes national parks and alpine areas, with the Australian Alps forming a defining environmental feature. The name Indi is derived from an Aboriginal word for the Murray River, reflecting the long-standing cultural and geographic significance of waterways to the region. Indi is one of Victoria’s original federal electorates, established at Federation and reshaped over time through redistributions as settlement patterns changed. Community life within the Indi Electorate is strongly connected to its natural environment and regional economy. Agriculture, forestry, tourism and alpine industries play important roles alongside education, health and service sectors based in regional hubs. Towns across the electorate are often separated by large distances, fostering strong local identities and a high level of community self-reliance. Environmental stewardship, water management and transport connectivity are enduring themes across the region, given its scale and varied terrain. Together, these characteristics define Indi as a diverse rural electorate shaped by landscape, regional centres and deeply connected communities across north-eastern Victoria.
