Sunshine Coast Independent Living Service (SCILS)

SCILS offers a wide array of personal development skills to adults with intellectual disabilities to effectively educate and prepare them for independent life including money handling, and budgeting, shopping and cooking, cleaning and maintenance, personal training and utilising public transport.
SCILS programs include In Home and Accommodation Support and Community Access programs, Recreational and Activity programs, and Social Groups.

The objectives of the SCILS’ programs are to:

• provide opportunities for people with a disability to develop skills, pursue interests and broaden their relationships.

• provide opportunities for people with a disability to make a visible and valued contribution to community activities

• promote inclusive practices

SCILS offers a variety of group activities, including Social Group Acticities, personal development skills, and support  for adults with intellectual disabilities that continue to educate and prepare adults for independent life.  Activities promote friendships, social skills and self-esteem. 

Group Activities may include 

•  Music, Aqua Aerobics, Fun & Fitness, Gardening and Maintenance, Arts & Crafts,  Bowling: New Groups Activities are under review.

Personal Development skills currently offered are

• Travel training, Money Handling and Budgeting, Literacy and Numeracy, Computer Skills, Cooking, Shopping, Behaviour Management, Personal Care and Grooming, Phone Etiquette, Preparation for Work Experience / Placement, Home duties, Household Managment and Social Activities and Awareness.

Every week SCILS runs Social Group activities.  Social groups attend activities in the community, visit various attractions and community service groups.  Social Groups also take day trips to museums, art galleries, theme parks, the movies etc.  Occasionally in-house presentations are made by various community organisations or professionals to inform and educate clients.    Social Group also runs a dance every year and hosts an annual Christmas party.  Weekend trips and holidays are also catered for and in the past have included excursions to Tangalooma, Fraser Island, whale watching and Cairns.
