About Us
The Franklin electorate is a federal electoral division located in southern Tasmania, covering a diverse mix of urban, regional and remote environments. It includes the Huon Valley, parts of the City of Clarence and the Municipality of Kingborough, as well as Bruny Island and the sub-Antarctic Macquarie Island. Classified as an outer-metropolitan electorate, Franklin encompasses coastal communities, rural townships, agricultural valleys and areas of significant environmental importance, including sections of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. The electorate is geographically distinctive, with non-contiguous boundaries separated by central Hobart, reflecting historic patterns of settlement around the Derwent River and Tasmania’s southern coastline.
The electorate was established in the early twentieth century and is named in honour of Sir?John?Franklin, a naval officer, polar explorer and former Lieutenant-Governor of Van Diemen’s Land. Since its creation, Franklin’s boundaries have evolved through redistributions to accommodate population change while maintaining representation for Tasmania’s southern communities. The electorate has a long parliamentary history and is known for its strong sense of regional identity, shaped by industries such as agriculture, aquaculture and tourism, alongside conservation and environmental stewardship. Franklin’s inclusion of remote islands and wilderness areas underscores the breadth of issues represented, from urban growth on Hobart’s fringes to the management and protection of some of Australia’s most isolated and ecologically significant places.
