About Us

UPDATE: Mother Tongue Multilingual Mic took place as part of the Multicultural Fringe Festival on 12th February 2016 to great success, with over 15 languages represented! We are currently planning for a second event to be held approximately mid-year.

If poetry is food for the soul, then the many languages we speak offer a banquet.

Mother Tongue is a poetry open mic celebrating the rich cultures of poetry, storytelling and wordsmithing from around the globe. It is a friendly, non-competitive space where all respectful voices are welcomed to paint pictures of culture, history and identity. No experience is required, only the willingness to perform your own work in a language other than English, or a mix of English and non-English. Poets are encouraged to convey meaning to the audience through a short explanation in spoken or written English, or other means such as pictures.

Whether you are a seasoned polyglot or have a smattering of schoolgirl French, Mother Tongue invites you to share your words with us. We particularly welcome Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, migrants, refugees and those whose first language is not English.

For more information or to register your interest in performing, please email [email protected], or call Jacqui (0433 845 900) or Lauren (0432 942 683).
