About Us

The Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Unit provides a tertiary referral service to the entire state of Queensland, Northern New South Wales and the Pacific Rim. 24 Hour Service for trauma and emergencies. Patient to present at Department of Emergency Medicine. The Unit is a regional surgical specialty and covers all aspects of maxillofacial treatment including: - maxillofacial trauma; - facial infections; - facial pain syndromes; - orthognathic surgery; - dentoalveolar surgery ( impacted teeth, bony cysts, etc ); - maxillofacial reconstructive surgery; - oral medicine; - temporo-mandibular joint surgery; - bony implants; and - benign and malignant conditions of the oral cavity and adjoining regions. The complex nature of the facial region makes consultation and cooperation with other surgical specialties desirable and often necessary. The specialties include Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Otolaryngology Surgery, Neurosurgery and Ophthalmology. The unit provides a prosthetic reconstruction and prevention treatment / rehabilitation service in the following areas: - oncology / radiology; - congenital malformation; and - trauma. Referral Process: Patients require a letter of referral from their local General Practitioner or Local Dental Officer to be sent to the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery unit and an appointment will be sent to them.
